Maalot
We had bid on an eluna.com auction and won the dinner voucher valued at 200 NIS. When we called to make a reservation we were told that the regular chef Gad Yaari was away and that it would be worth our while to wait for his return. So a couple of days ago, we called the restaurant and after determining that Gad was back, we made a reservation for dinner.
First a few words about the restaurant and the chef.
Maalot is located at 7 Maalot Street, which is a small side street that runs off King George just
The restaurant is small, with a few tables inside and a few on a fenced patio facing the street. It is simply furnished and has a very relaxed atmosphere. If you were looking for a very elegant place to eat, this is not the place for you. But if you are looking for good food and good service, you have come to the right place.
The hashgacha is Rabbanut Yerushalayim, tho' Gad told us that all the meat that he uses is glatt/chalak, the fowl is all mehadrin, the veggies are all chaslat and it is all bishul yisrael.

Papagaio Prime
The new Papagaio Prime, formerly Market Arena, is my kind of restaurant. The restaurant is located in the Arena mall at the Herzlia Boat Marina. Park your car in the underground lot as close to the yellow section as you can and elevator up to the first floor. Parking is free. With the exception of one or two low steps you can consider this a wheelchair friendly restaurant. Rest rooms are on the dining level.
Everything at this restaurant is as you like it, including the seating. There is indoor seating and outdoor seating overlooking the Marina. Inside the tables suit the size of your party, whatever it may be. There are bar stools of every height: standard tall bar stools and more comfortable bar chairs on an elevated platform alongside the bar. There is also a private room with glass doors that can seat about 50 people comfortably. Keep that in mind when you make your next party.
This new restaurant is vintage Papagaio with Brazilian music and atmosphere. The restaurant offers three options: the Brazilian menu, an a la carte menu, and the Juntos, their specialty, which is a mix of meats that you can order by weight. How does the Juntos work? You can order a platter of either 800 grams or 1200 grams (nis 245) of grilled meats. Your order is delivered to the center of your table in a sizzling pan, to be shared by your party. The quality of the meat, they tell me, at Papagaio Prime, is the best that they have ever had. Try it and find out.

Cafe Rishonim

Café Rishonim, a dairy restaurant in the Jordan Valley (Emek Hayarden) is located in the Rishonim Courtyard of Kibbutz Degania Aleph. Historically Degania Aleph was the first Kibbutz in history, hence the name, which means the firsts. Degania is the birthplace of several famous Israeli figures among them Moshe Dayan. Founded in 1910, the kibbutz is now 100 years old. I think that warrants a visit.
Rishonim Cafe is a little slice of Israeli nostalgia. The cafe is in a pastoral setting nestled between great expanses of greenery and luscious plants and flowers. This is a very child-friendly restaurant with plenty of outdoor space and menu items sized and priced for the restaurant's young guests.

Off the Square

Who remembers Off The Square restaurant when they were located just off Kikar Zion?
If you do remember this restaurant from those days, you must be following the Jerusalem restaurant scene for a while.
About 15 years ago, Off the Square was one of the best kosher dairy restaurants in Jerusalem. It was also one of the only ones. The restaurant had levels, and party rooms, and they were often the venue for bar and bat mitzva parties, sheva brachot, and what not.
Enter the Intifada and exit Off the Square. The restaurant remained closed for almost 10 years. In 2010 this restaurant reopened
Off the Square is happy to cater smachot of up to 42 people.
